Year two of the Jeff Lebby era has arrived and the Mississippi State coach is back to work.

After a disappointing first season, the coach and his staff are doing what they can to get things back on track in Starkville. The players on the field will be the difference for State this season if they are to make a return and we’re going to discuss every single one of them over the course of the next few months.

As we do every year, we’re counting down 100 days until State’s first game at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on August 30. Over this period of time, we’ll breakdown every scholarship player on the roster, look back at great moments in MSU history and even talk about legends that have come before the current Bulldogs.

Today, we look at a young defensive lineman that the Bulldogs would love to see take a big step this year.

97 Days: No. 97, Redshirt Freshman DT Terrance Hibbler

There were high expectations for Hibbler coming out of high school.

The Holmes County product comes from a school that has been good to the Bulldogs over the years. Players like Corey Ellington, Joseph Head and Khamauri Rogers all eventually came to Starkville to play college ball. Hibbler has a chance to be the best of the bunch if he stays on track.

In high school, Hibbler was one of the most sought-after recruits in the country as he racked up offers from across the United States. Alabama, Texas, Ole Miss, LSU, Auburn, Oregon, Oklahoma, Florida, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Arkansas and a whole host of others came calling at one point during his recruitment. The Bulldogs specifically had to hold off teams like Ole Miss, Bama and Texas but Hibbler wanted to be a Bulldog and play for coach David Turner.

It was a big win for Turner and State as the Bulldogs landed the state of Mississippi’s No. 18 player by the On3 Industry rankings and the No. 48 defensive lineman in the country. Hibbler earned first-team All-State by the Mississippi Association of Coaches and was the Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year his senior year when he racked up 92 tackles and 21.0 sacks.

During his career, Hibbler had 178 tackles, 44.0 TFL and 25.0 sacks as he wrecked opposing backfields.

Now 6’3, 310 pounds, Hibbler has gotten physically prepared to make a difference in the SEC. The Bulldogs brought him along slowly last year, despite not having a lot of depth and talent up front. He played in just two games and made two tackles on the year, both of which came in the season opener against Eastern Kentucky. Hibbler wouldn’t play again until the Battle for the Golden Egg against Ole Miss in the final game of the year.

In 2025, Hibbler will have a chance to get more playing time and will be in a more talented group this year.
