A major contributor at wide receiver is no longer available for the rest of the season.

A source told Maroon and White Daily that sophomore wide receiver Creed Whittemore will not be playing for the Bulldogs for the remainder of the 2024 season and will take a redshirt. Whittemore played in the first four games this season and made an impact for State this year.

Wednesday night showed Whittemore as OUT on the Availability Report released by MSU ahead of the Bulldogs’ game on Saturday at Texas.

The news comes on the same day that UNLV QB Matthew Sluka made national news by announcing his decision to sit out the rest of the season after leading his team to a 3-0 start. USC DL Bear Alexander also decided to sit the rest of the season as both players look poised to transfer after the season.

Whittemore has played in all 16 games during his first two seasons on campus and has 15 catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns with five carries for 101 yards and another score. Last season, Whittemore was playing behind Tulu Griffin as a true freshman and his role was expected to increase in a major way as a sophomore.

“I was playing behind a guy that was obviously pretty good,” Whittemore said earlier this fall. “I was thankful of being on the plane and the bus for the game because a lot of people redshirt. I was grateful for that opportunity and was never frustrated.

“I think everybody wants to breakout. That’s everybody’s goal and that’s obviously my goal. I hope everybody breaks out. I want to win games first and foremost.”

In the first game this year, Whittemore broke off a 41-yard touchdown run and had a catch. He’s had three catches for 62 yards the last two weeks.

State is off to a 1-3 start this season with starting QB Blake Shapen now out for the year with a shoulder injury. The Bulldogs have games with six top 25 opponents in the final eight games and five of those teams are currently inside the top 10.
