As the NFL regular season winds down and the playoffs arrive next week, the league announced its Pro Bowl selections on Thursday and Mississippi State had a couple of selections.

For the first time in his NFL career, Jacksonville Jaguars punter Logan Cooke made the list for the Pro Bowl as he was named the AFC starter at punter. Cooke has already put together a fantastic NFL career, but this year is the first time he’s been recognized as a Pro Bowl pick.

The Columbia native is in the middle of his best season as a pro with 64 punts for 3,159 yards and just three touchbacks with 32 punts downed inside the 20 yard line. Cooke’s 49.4 yards per punt are the most in his seven years in the league.

During his career, Cooke has cemented himself as one of the best in the league and he’s towards the top in career yards per punt. Cook’s 47.4 yards per punt total is good for fourth in league history with his 44.6 net yards are an NFL record as it stands.

Cooke has played in 111 career games with 464 punts, nearly 22,000 yards and 194 punts inside the 20. He averages just 6.03% touchbacks on his punts.

Making the Pro Bowl for a sixth time in his nine years is former Bulldog great Chris Jones. The dominant defensive tackle has starred for the Kansas City Chiefs for his entire career and has grown as one of the most feared defenders in the league.

Jones has played in 15 of his team’s games this year and has helped the Chiefs to a stout 15-1 record as they try to win a third-straight Super Bowl and the fourth in Jones’ career.

Though the sack numbers haven’t been as high for Jones this season, it hasn’t stopped him from being a constant problem for opposing offenses as he takes on double teams.

Jones has 37 tackles at his DT spot with 9.0 TFL, 5.0 sacks and a forced fumble.  He eclipsed 300 tackles earlier this year and has 87.0 TFL with 80.5 sacks in 138 games. Jones has also deflected 37 passes, forced 13 fumbles, recovered three more and intercepted two passes.

The Houston, Miss., native is already fourth in KC history in sacks but far and away the all-time leader among interior linemen. He’s just 5.0 sacks shy of third place on the list in Neil Smith and 9.0 away from Tamba Hali in second. The great Derrick Thomas is the all-time leader in Chiefs history with 126.5.

Other Bulldogs could join the Pro Bowl team after being alternates and that list had not yet been finalized. Green Bay Packers’ lineman Elgton Jenkins was one player that had already been named a first alternate for the game if a spot opened up.

The Pro Bowl games begin February 2 in Orlando.
