Jeff Lebby, Bulldogs in the mix for two priority quarterback targets

Jeff Lebby is building his 2026 signing class and the offensive coach puts a priority on the quarterback position.
Last season, Lebby landed one of the top QBs in the country from right down the road in Noxubee County in KaMario Taylor. To go along with Taylor and starting quarterback Blake Shapen, Lebby picked up Luke Kromenhoek out of Florida State. Now he’s set his eyes on the current class.
Two signal callers have emerged as the top targets for Lebby in recent weeks and both of them have narrowed their college choices.
On3 four-star Derek Zammit announced his Final Four on Wednesday as the New Jersey native put the Bulldogs in there with Alabama, Washington and Syracuse. The Wayne DePaul Catholic QB has built a strong relationship with Lebby over the last few months and just recently visited Starkville last week.
“It’s really nice. They breathe football,” Zammit said to On3 earlier last month. “It’s really cool to see those Southern schools. Especially SEC schools. They got Coach Lebby taking over this year as a head coach and they have Coach Holacek and we’ve started to develop a really good relationship with them. They’re super knowledgeable and I think they’re really heading in the right direction over there. I’m excited to see what they do with it. Maybe I’ll be a part of it. We’ll figure that out later down the line.”

The 6’1, 195-pound Zammit is rated as the state of New Jersey’s six best player and the No. 237 player overall. He’s the No. 18 QB in the class according to On3. As a junior, he threw for 2,582 yards with 35 touchdowns and four interceptions and rushed for 560 yards and four TD.
Cass (Ga.) QB Brodie McWhorter has been bullish on State for the last few months. This comes after the former West Virginia commitment opened things up after his commitment a year ago.
McWhorter has been to Starkville several times now in the last few years and was just recently in town for a two-day visit for spring practice. State is in the final five schools with Auburn, Wisconsin, Colorado and Indiana. He has a commitment date set for May 15.
State’s 2026 signing class is currently ranked 29th nationally with seven commitments. New Albany OT Emanuel Tucker is the leader of the class with his four-star ranking.
