Diamond Dawgs' Friday schedule adjusted with cold temperatures present

While no double headers are anticipated this weekend, a cold three-game baseball slate is on the way for No. 18 Mississippi State.
The Diamond Dawgs are preparing for a three-game showdown with Missouri State beginning on Friday afternoon and running through Sunday. A cold blast has come through the south over the last week and brought to Mississippi brutally cold temperatures in the last few days and with that came a change in the schedule for game one.
With lows expected in the 20s on Friday and highs barely climbing above 40 degrees, Friday’s game one has been pushed up from 4 p.m. to a 2 p.m. first pitch. Junior LHP Pico Kohn is expected to start that game as the Alabama native tries to replicate or best his week one performance.
Kohn started the first game of the season last Friday and threw 5.0 innings, gave up just one hit, no runs and no walks while striking out 11 batters. He helped State to a 17-3 victory in seven innings.
Game two is also set for 2 p.m. between the Bulldogs and Bears and Karson Ligon is the projected starter. Ligon was touching 97 mph with his fastball last week but it was his secondary pitches that would get him in a groove as the game went along.

After giving up two hits and a run in the opening inning against Manhattan, Ligon would settle in and throw 4.0 frames, giving up four hits and one run with no walks and eight strikeouts. Stone Simmons is expected to start game three on the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday and Simmons returned to the mound for the first time in a game for the Bulldogs since March of 2022.
Simmons was on a pitch count and threw 50 as he lasted 3.0 innings and gave up one hit, no runs, two walks and struck out five batters. Another cold weekend likely won’t see him stretch out much further than that, but he could see more pitches this weekend.
State (3-1) is coming off of a midweek loss at Southern Miss 3-0 as the Bulldogs bats went silent against the intstate foe and they didn’t defend it well. The Bears (2-1) had a series win over Sam Houston State before seeing a midweek game at Central Arkansas cancelled.
