As Mississippi State attempted to get through Wednesday’s midweek showdown with Nicholls without digging into its main bullpen arms, the offense would test the Diamond Dawg winning streak.

MSU had scored five or more runs in the last 11 games but were held at bay in Biloxi on Wednesday. The four Bulldog pitchers that threw would find a way to survive, however, and State won 2-1.

A groundout from Ace Reese in the third and a wild pitch that scored a run in the fourth would score the only runs for MSU in the game. State had just four hits as a team and six more walks but couldn’t produce enough to feel comfortable.

Two walks each came from Bryce Chance and Gatlin Sanders and Chance would reach in all three of his plate appearances.

As for MSU’s pitchers, the Bulldogs threw two position players with Noah Sullivan garnering the start. It was the first pitching appearance of the season for Sullivan who has been the Bulldogs’ designated hitter throughout the season.

The USC-Upstate transfer was a starter for his previous team and showed his comfortability on the mound as he pitched 3.0 innings, gave up just two hits, no runs, no walks and struck out two batters.

Fellow duel-position player Nolan Stevens followed up Sullivan and allowed the only run of the game in the fifth inning. He pitched 2.1 frames, gave up two hits, two walks and a run and struck out two batters. Kevin Mannell and Ryan McPherson combined to pitch the final 3.2 innings and surrendered just one base runner via a walk. McPherson was near perfect in his 2.0 frames with four strikeouts and just a hit batter allowed.

The Bulldogs (13-4) have now won six-straight ball games heading into SEC play on Friday. State hosts No. 11 Texas beginning Friday night at 6 p.m. Saturday’s game is scheduled for 2 p.m. with Sunday’s game on SEC Network at 1p.m. Weather could impact the weekend series with predicted severe storms in the area.
