Mississippi State carried its offense to Biloxi on Tuesday evening.

The Diamond Dawg bats stayed hot on a windy night down on the coast as State scored nine or more runs for the fifth-straight game. MSU navigated a rocky sixth inning and won a 9-4 game against Old Dominion at the Hancock Whitney Classic.

It was the first time since 2010 that State has managed to score nine runs in five-straight games and the 11-consecutive outings with five or more runs was accomplished for the first time since 2000.

The fourth inning was where the damage was done by the Bulldogs as they scored five runs on four hits. Hunter Hines started the inning with a double and was driven in by Aaron Downs to break up a 1-1 tie. A fielder’s choice groundout and an error on a throw down to second base scored two runs and Ace Reese delivered a two-run double to make it a 6-1 advantage.

Dane Burns got State into trouble in the sixth. Leading 7-1, Burns loaded the bases with no one out and allowed a run to come in on a wild pitch. Chase Hungate came in to get the first out on a flyout before giving up a single. Hungate would get a double play to end the inning and the score was 7-4.

The Bulldogs would get two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when Noah Sullivan doubled and Hines had a sac fly for the 9-4 lead. That would hold for the final.

It was a 10-hit evening for State and Reese led the way with a 2-for-3 night as he had two RBI and a double. Downs stayed hot with his third-straight game of multiple hits and was 2-for-5 with an RBI double. Sawyer Reeves drove in two runs on a double.

State also had 10 free bases with six walks and four hit batters.

Evan Siary started the game and threw 5.0 innings with two hits, no runs, one walk and five strikeouts. The Bulldogs pitched six guys with 16 strikeouts. Nate Williams delivered three of them to close out the ball game in the ninth.

“They were great. We only had the one little hiccup,” coach Chris Lemonis said of the staff. “You’ll probably see some faces you haven’t seen on the mound this year (Wednesday). We’ve got to get prepared for the weekend and pitching wise it makes it tough on these two midweeks.”

The win was the fifth-straight for MSU (12-4) as the Diamond Dawgs try to build momentum before SEC play this weekend. State will finish out the Hancock Whitney Classic in Biloxi on Wednesday night at 5 p.m. with the game being broadcasted on SEC Network.
