With the bases loaded in a tie game in the fourth inning, Mississippi State had a chance to change the course of the ball game, but Ole Miss took advantage instead.

A missed opportunity with the bases juiced and Hunter Elliot teetering gave the No. 24 Rebels some juice. The next inning, Ole Miss poured on five runs and took control of game one of the series in a 10-4 victory.

It was the tale of two aces handling some adversity differently. Elliot was falling apart in the fourth inning as he allowed four-straight runners to reach and an RBI triple from Bryce Chance tied the game.

After that triple, Elliot walked and hit a batter to load the bases for Gatlin Sanders and he was down 3-1 in the count. Sanders swung and flew out to center to end the thread and Elliot would finish his outing with six-straight outs.

Meanwhile for Kohn, the wheels fell off. A leadoff double followed by an error on a bunt scored a run and gave way to four more runs with a three-run home run from Judd Utermark and a solo shot from Colin Reuter giving them a 7-2 advantage.

The Rebels built that lead up to 10-2 before State got a home run from Gehrig Frei and an RBI single from Noah Sullivan in the eighth, but the lead was too great.

It wasn’t very good in any facet for the Bulldogs, but pitching was the poorest areas of the game. Kohn (5-3) lasted 5.0 innings, gave up six hits, eight runs, three walks and he struck out his 100th batter as he K’d seven in the game. Stone Simmons gave up two runs on two walks and a hit in 2.2 innings while Kevin Mannell pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief.

State had just six hits in the game with Frei leading the team on a 2-for-5 night with an RBI on the solo home run. Joe Powell walked twice. MSU’s offense had a total of seven runners left on bases with the bases left loaded twice in the game.

The Diamond Dawgs (29-20, 10-15 SEC) now have their backs against the wall for the rest of the weekend. Game two is slated for 8:10 p.m. on Friday to cap the doubleheader.
