WATCH: Mississippi State receiver Jordan Mosley recaps first day of spring practice
Mississippi State’s offensive players got their first practice look at head coach Jeff Lebby’s offense on Tuesday as the Bulldogs opened up spring drills. Naturally, there’s a lot to learn the rest of spring and the remainder of the offseason.
Following Tuesday’s session, Mississippi State junior receiver Jordan Mosley met with the media to share his thoughts on the start of spring ball and Lebby’s offensive system:
Q: What catches your attention so far with the offense?
Mosley: As a receiver coming into this offense it is everything you want as a receiver. A lot of balls, a lot of major plays to be made. We are just going to put a lot of points on the board quick, fast, explosive. So it’s a lot of fun.
Q: Receivers coach Chad Bumphis is back on the staff. How good is it to have that familiarity?
Mosley: I think it is great for us. We didn’t have to learn a new guy. We didn’t have to try to figure him out or anything. Coming in, it was good to already know what to expect from your coach and also he knows what to expect from us every single day. He is going to make sure we come in every day to dominate and make sure we are having fun. At the end of the day he makes sure you want to come out here and handle business.
Q: How was the first day of spring practice?
Mosley: It was a lot of mistakes but overall it was fun, it was quick. There were a lot of plays made from the older guys to the younger guys. That was great to see from a first day. Usually it is kind of sloppy but it was not as sloppy as I expected. That is a great positive if you ask me.
Q: How is the adjustment to tempo going?
Mosley: It’s going good. Something I think helped us this offseason was a lot of running. I mean a lot of running. So it got us in shape. I think it’s hard to get in football shape regardless once the pads come on. But it’s fast and it keeps the defense on its toes, make them tired, wear them out. With that there’s a lot of big plays to be made down the field.

Q: How tough is it mentally to get used to with that increased tempo?
Mosley: Honestly, I don’t think it’s tough to make it and I think it’s an advantage. When you look at it that way I have an advantage in each and every rep. So it’s going out there and going fast, quick tempo. I know I am going to get tired but I do it every single day. I am going to be in tip-top shape and eventually, I am going to get a big play or the guy next to me or any of the guys beside me are going to get a big play. Knowing that makes it easier to understand.
Q: Thoughts on the freshmen receivers?
Mosley: I love them, every single one of them. Stonka (Braylon Burnside) had a great day, Mario (Craver) had a fantastic day, as well. All of those guys came in over the winter and they bought in. There was no sense of arrogance. They came in and just wanted to learn and wanted to grow and develop. Seeing that as a freshman, that is everything you want.
Q: How has the process been getting to know some of those transfer receivers like Kelly Akharaiyi and Kevin Coleman?
Mosley: It’s been good. Kelly and Kevin, we’ve been real close throughout this process. We work out every single day with each other. So just doing that we build a lot of comradery and a lot of trust within each other. Having Kevin next to me, sometimes I might not get a signal and I will look at him and he knows exactly what to do or vice versa. Having guys around you, like Seydou (Traore), as well, Seydou is going to be a huge product as well. Having guys like that around you makes the game a lot easier, quick, to go out there and execute every play.
Q: Your impressions of quarterback Blake Shapen?
Mosley: Blake is a pretty laid-back guy but once he gets on the field he is about winning. He is about dominating. He is about being perfect. It is hard to be perfect but he tries to be perfect. Throwing with him over the break or over the weekends, if the ball wasn’t where he wanted you are going to do it again and do it again. Having a quarterback like that with so much attention to detail, it makes the game easier for me. I know when I am running a slant the ball is going to be exactly where he intends to put it. So I don’t have to worry about it being a crazy catch. It just makes it easy for me.
