An abysmal Southern University pitching staff was hounded by Mississippi State hitting on Tuesday night.

The Diamond Dawgs had 11 hits, eight walks, two hit batsmen and reached on three errors in six innings on the way to a 16-2 run-rule win in seven frames. 15 different players got at bats in the game as the Bulldogs never felt any pressure in the win.

State did plenty of damage in the first three innings starting with the opening frame. The Bulldogs would bat through the lineup in the first and score six runs to take the early advantage. MSU came back in the second inning and extended that lead to 9-1 with three more runs and had a four-run third that made it 13-2.

The last two innings added three more runs total with two coming in the sixth on Dylan Cupp’s two-run double.

Gehrig Frei, Steven Spalitta and Gatlin Sanders all got two hits in the win. Spalitta had his biggest night as a Bulldog with the sophomore going 2-for-3 with three RBI on his first career home run. Sanders was also 2-for-2 with two RBI and Frei finished 2-for-3 with a double.

Hunter Hines finished with just one hit but dove in a game-high four RBI. Sawyer Reeves, Bryce Chance and Noah Sullivan walked three times in the victory.  Cupp had two at bats and he reached on an error and then had the two RBI double.

It was a bullpen game for State pitching, but the Diamond Dawgs held down a potent offense for the most part. MSU allowed just three hits and two walks from six different pitchers with two of the hits and both runs being of the solo home run variety.

One of those homers came off of starter Ryan McPherson who threw 2.0 innings and struck out four batters with no walks. After Duke Stone gave up two hits, a walk and a run in the third inning, the rest of the pitchers were dominant. Jacob Pruitt, Dane Burns, Kevin Mannell and Cade O’Leary pitched the final 4.0 innings with no hits, no runs, one walk and five strikeouts to close things out.

State (23-14, 5-10 SEC) have won seven of the last nine games heading into another big weekend in conference play. The Bulldogs have won the last two SEC series against South Carolina and Alabama. The two teams both started the year 1-9 but are gaining a bit of confidence in the league.

The three-game set begins on Friday at 7 p.m. on SEC Network with Saturday’s game at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN and Sunday’s at 2 p.m. on ESPN 2.
