QUICK RECAP: State drops 33-14 decision on the road at No. 7 Tennessee
Mississippi State went on the road against another top 10 team on Saturday night and were overmatched.
The Bulldogs put forth some effort but it wasn’t enough in a 33-14 win for the No. 7 Tennessee Volunteers. UT used its elite defense to hold off the Bulldogs after losing starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava in the first half.
Despite the Bulldog defense having one of its more productive games this season, the offense wasn’t able to find enough consistency. State had 271 yards offensively but freshman Michael Van Buren finished just 10-of-26 for just 92 yards and an interception. Van Buren was also sacked four times.
Davon Booth was the standout in the game as he rushed 20 times for 125 yards and a touchdown. It was a career-high rushing for the transfer from Utah State. Johnnie Daniels added 10 carries for 63 yards as the Bulldogs rushed 38 times for 179 yards as a team.
Kevin Coleman had five catches in the game for 68 yards to lead the way, but the Bulldogs had no other pass catcher with multiple catches.

Tennessee led 7-0 after the first quarter and took a 20-7 lead into the locker room after the Bulldogs gave up a field goal, gave the ball back to UT and surrendered another field goal all within the final minute of the half.
State’s defense forced three punts, held the Vols to field goals on four other drives and forced a fumble in the game, but the offense couldn’t take advantage. Safety Isaac Smith had a career-high 20 tackles in the game.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 2-8 on the year and they are now 0-6 in SEC play. State has a bye week this week before hosting Missouri on November 23.
