Diamond Dawgs get swept by No. 11 Texas to start rugged SEC slate

A weekend of what-ifs ended for Mississippi State with an SEC opening sweep from No. 11 Texas.
The Diamond Dawgs had a double-header Sunday that finished off the series and State came away with two losses to the Longhorns. This followed MSU losing 8-7 to Texas on Friday evening.
It was a frustrating weekend for the Bulldogs after coming into opening weekend with high hopes. State had a 5-3 lead against UT in the first game of the weekend before giving up five runs in the seventh inning before losing 8-7.
A severe storm delayed Saturday’s game to Sunday and there would not be a better ending for State. The Bulldogs worked back into the first game of the doubleheader with a two-run double from Ace Reese that tied it at 3-3 in the sixth, but a two-run home run in the top of the seventh would spell doom for State.
In game two, State blew more opportunities at the plate. Trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning, the Diamond Dawgs had two batters up with one out when a ball was thrown into the outfield. Dylan Cupp tried to score from second and was thrown out at home and that ended any threat State had offensively as the Bulldogs lost 3-1.

MSU had just four hits in the second game of that doubleheader. Karson Ligon started on the mound and threw 3.2 innings with four hits, two runs and four strikeouts. The bullpen couldn’t hold the game where it was as Charlie Foster, Ryan McPherson and Dane Burns helped two runs come home in the seventh to push the lead to 4-1.
The series sweep gets State off to a horrible start in the ruthless SEC. State fell to 13-7 on the year and now prepares for a No. 12 Oklahoma team that is churning out wins at a higher rate than many expected preseason. The Sooners are 17-2 and 2-1 to start SEC play after taking two of three against South Carolina to start the year.
