Diamond Dawgs take midweek win at UAB, 8-3

A few big hits with runners on base got Mississippi State a lead on Tuesday night and the Bulldogs got the bullpen pitching to keep it.
Taking on the UAB Blazers in Birmingham, State had three innings with multiple runs and it helped the team to a 8-3 win. Over half of the team’s hits would lead to runs as the Bulldogs took advantage when the base knocks came.
State had just seven hits in the contest but the Diamond Dawgs were 3-of-8 with runners in scoring position. The Bulldogs had just one hit in the four innings, however, with Noah Sullivan delivering a two-run double in the first frame and that would be all for the next few frames.
After UAB tied things up with back-to-back doubles in the second, the Bulldogs would finally get back on board in the fifth. With one out, State scored four runs with an RBI double from Gehrig Frei, an RBI single from Ace Reese and a two-run home run from Sullivan making it 6-2.
With the lead at 6-3, the Bulldogs would put the Blazers away in the eighth inning as they loaded the bases with just one out. That’s when Gatlin Sanders delivered a two-run single to push the lead to 8-3.

Sullivan finished 2-for-4 at the plate and led the team with three RBI with a double and a home run. Frei was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI double. Sanders drove in two runs.
The Bulldog bullpen was strong in the game again. After Sullivan surrendered the first runs of his State tenure with 2.0 innings, five hits, two runs and a walk, State surrendered just one run the rest of the game. Ryan McPherson gave up an unearned run in his 4.0 innings but had just one hit and two walks against him while striking out five.
Nate Williams and Luke Dotson pitched the final 3.0 innings and combined to give up just one hit with no runs and no walks while striking out six.
The victory improved the Bulldogs to 20-13 on the season and they head to No. 12 Alabama. Friday’s game is set for 6 p.m. with a Saturday first pitch at 2 p.m. and Sunday’s at 1 p.m.
