A day after Mississippi State secured the first top 10 win for the program since 2018, the Bulldog players that helped make it happened are earning their recognition.

Mjracle Sheppard and Jerkaila Jordan were awarded SEC honors on Tuesday as Sheppard took home Co-Freshman of the Week and Jordan was named Co-Player of the Week. The two split it with Alabama’s Essence Cody and South Carolina’s Kamilla Cardoso respectively.

It was the sixth time this year that an MSU player has been named to the weekly awards and five different Bulldogs have earned the recognition. Jordan joins Jessika Carter (twice), Darrione Rogers and Lauren Park-Lane as Player of the Week while Sheppard and Quanirah Montague have both earned Freshman of the Week this season.

It was an extraordinary effort for the two standout guards on Monday night to help the Bulldogs to a 77-73 win over No. 9 LSU at Humphrey Coliseum. Sheppard came off the bench for State and immediately injected energy into the game as the Bulldogs went from down 8-2 to leading 13-8 on an 11-0 run.

Sheppard finished the ball game with 12 points, six steals, five assists and four rebounds. On the season, the Washington state native averages 5.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.7 steals a game as a sparkplug off of MSU’s bench.

“I was just focused on what we worked on in practice which was being focused on getting one stop at a time,” Sheppard said. “We knew we could get up and pressure the ball, so we just took advantage when we could.”

Jordan is in the middle of the best season of her career as the senior guard is averaging 17.0 points per game with 6.1 rebounds (both career highs) and is just five points shy of having the most points in a season in her three-year career in Starkville.

The New Orleans native moved up to No. 16 in MSU history in points scored with 1,179 as she poured in 24 points on LSU with 15 of those coming in the second half and 13 in the huge third quarter for the Bulldogs. It was the ninth time this season that Jordan has notched 20 or more points, but this one meant a little more.

“I’ve been waiting on this one,” Jordan said after her big game. “I’m from Louisiana, but at the same time I put on a Mississippi State jersey. I did it for Mississippi State.”

The Bulldogs (17-5, 4-3 SEC) will go on the road the next two ball games to test themselves as they’ll travel to Kentucky on Thursday night at 6 p.m. on SEC Network + and Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. on SEC Network.
