Mississippi State lands Northern Illinois WR Cam Thompson out of the transfer portal
Mississippi State wide receivers coach Chad Bumphis added to his room out of the transfer portal on Monday with the commitment of Northern Illinois transfer Cam Thompson.
The 6’0, 198-pound receiver is currently on a visit in Starkville but his commitment was first reported by Pete Nakos of On3.
Thompson comes to Starkville with two seasons of eligibility left after redshirting at Eastern Illinois and then spending his last two years at NIU. The Boardman, Ohio native most recently had 28 catches for 391 yards for the Huskies this last season with a high of eight receptions, 128 yards and a touchdown against Ball State.
After taking over as primary kick returner midway through the season, Thompson also became a major weapon there and returned 10 kickoffs for 283 yards. He had a 91-yard kick return against Wester Michigan to highlight his skills there.

Thompson played in eight games in 2023 and had two catches for 10 yards and played in the final four games of the season at Eastern Illinois before redshirting.
This is the third NIU player to transfer to MSU this offseason as Thompson joins EDGE Nevaeh Sanders and DE Raishien Thomas who previously committed to the Bulldogs. Thompson is Bumphis’ third receiver committed and joins Michigan State’s Jaron Glover and Oklahoma’s Brenen Thompson.
