Pico Kohn lands SEC Pitcher of the Week honor

Last weekend didn’t play out the way that Mississippi State wanted on the baseball diamond, but it wasn’t all sour in Norman, Okla.
Pico Kohn put on a display in his Friday night start and delivered one of the best performances of his Diamond Dawg career. In the middle of a pitcher’s duel with talented Oklahoma right hander Kyson Witherspoon, Kohn would take the spotlight. His performance earned him SEC Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
The Alabama native had a couple of rocky moments early in the game where traffic on the bases created some pressure-packed moments. Instead of giving in, Kohn buckled down and got out of trouble – then he started rolling.
At one point, Kohn retired 10-straight batters in the ball game and struck out and incredible eight hitters in a row. It led to a scoreless appearance in 6.0 innings with just two hits and two walks surrendered and he struck out 10 batters. It was the fifth-consecutive start that Kohn has pitched at least 6.0 innings and the third time this season he’s struck out double digit hitters.
Kohn’s performance allowed the Bulldogs to hand the game over to the bullpen with a 2-0 lead. State won the game 2-1 as Kohn got some good pitching from Stone Simmons and Luke Dotson to close out a Friday night win.

After missing all of his sophomore year and the first part of last season, Kohn returned from Tommy John surgery and has worked himself into being a Bonafide Friday ace for Justin Parker and Chris Lemonis.
Kohn improved to 4-0 in six starts with a 2.52 ERA in 35.2 innings. He has a .70 WHIP and teams are batting just .148 against him as he’s walked just seven batters and struck out 53.
The Diamond Dawgs (15-9, 1-5 SEC) were unfortunately unable to duplicate that performance by Kohn as State lost the next two ball games and dropped the season series of the year. The team has to fight back this week with a home matchup against Samford on Tuesday night followed by a weekend series at No. 8 LSU beginning Thursday.
