WATCH: Mississippi State defensive lineman Trevion Williams talks spring ball
Last season was a frustrating one for Mississippi State defensive lineman Trevion Williams. After working his way into the rotation, his redshirt freshman season was cut short due to a season-ending injury.
These days Williams is back healthy again and learning a new system under defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzler. Following Saturday’s spring practice session, Williams met with the media to discuss spring ball among other topics:
Q: How’s practice been so far?
Williams: It’s been pretty good. Defense is coming together. We’ve got a new defensive coordinator, new plays, obviously, and new players. So the game chemistry and the player chemistry is coming together slowly but it’s coming together.
Q: What position do they have you working at?
Williams: Defensive tackle.
Q: How frustrating was that last year when you started playing a lot and then got injured?
Williams: It was very frustrating because once I got hurt, I went down and couldn’t play anymore for the season. I was just getting in the groove. Now that I am back, I am going to transition from then to now and I got a point to prove.
Q: How are things different for you this year?
Williams: It’s not really different and is pretty much the same. Playing my technique, playing my position. It’s just different coverages but up front it is pretty much the same still.

Q: With this defense there’s some young talent that hasn’t gotten their chance to play much yet. How big of a chip is there on those shoulders?
Williams: I would say the chip is pretty big because we are young and people are expecting us to do what we’re going to do. So we got a lot to prove to people that doubt us.
Q: How has the transition been getting used to that offensive tempo?
Williams: It’s new. Now that we got Coach (Jeff) Lebby, he’s a fast-paced offensive coordinator. It’s better for us to get us in shape so we can play better in the season.
Q: When you say things are pretty much the same for you, is that because David Turner is still your position coach?
Williams: Yes it’s because of Coach Turner.
Q: What’s it been like for you to play under Coach Turner still?
Williams: It’s very good because he’s a genuine coach and he’s going to shoot it to your straight. Every day, all day he’s the same. So it’s pretty good to have a coach like that.
Q: Your thoughts on the defensive line transfers Kedrick Bingley-Jones and Sulaiman Kpaka?
Williams: They are going to be great big keys for us. Coming into the season, they are experienced, they are older. So they know what to expect during a game.
Q: Any young guys sticking out to you on the defensive line?
Williams: Yes, Kai McClendon. He’s going to be pretty good for us so keep an eye on him.
