Mississippi State defensive lineman Trevion Williams focused on consistency
After an injury-riddled 2023 campaign, Mississippi State defensive lineman Trevion Williams has been able to gain valuable experience thus far this season. The Bulldog redshirt freshman is still needing more reps to progress his game but after five games, Williams owns 18 tackles to lead the State defensive linemen in that category.
Earlier this week after practice, Williams met with the media to discuss the progress of the defensive line and what lies ahead:
Q: The defensive line created more pressure against Texas. What was different for the defensive line in that game?
Williams: I wouldn’t say anything was different. We just had to go out with the mindset to not go play the logo but go play the man in the jersey. We just treated it like another game and went out there and did what we’re supposed to do.
Q: Any specific goals for the bye week?
Williams: Really just get our bodies back right. Work on the fundamental things that we messed up on in the past week. Just get better so we can prepare for Georgia/
Q: What’s your plans for the weekend?
Williams: Recovery.
Q: When do you guys start getting into Georgia preparation?
Williams: Probably Monday. We’re going to gameplan a little this week but we were going to put that stuff in next week.
Q: Are the practice this week any different than game week?
Williams: It’s the same.
Q: Do you feel like the defensive line is making progress?
Williams: I do. We’re a new group so we’re getting comfortable playing with each other. I feel like the brotherhood is coming together and we’re learning what people can do and what the other person can’t do. We’re still learning about each of our strengths and our weaknesses.
Q: Is the Texas game something you can build on with your confidence?
Williams: Yes sir. We can build on that and do it for at least the next four quarters and ongoing.

Q: A lot of guys are big football junkies. When you are not playing do you watch a lot of football?
Williams: Not me. I don’t watch a lot of football unless it’s an opponent we are about to play.
Q: Where do you feel like you are as a defensive lineman and your progression?
Williams: Not where I want to be. I’m still learning. I got a lot of stuff I need to improve on. So I’m not where I need to be.
Q: In what ways?
Williams: My technique.
Q: You are listed as a redshirt freshman now. When did you find out you got that extra year back?
Williams: I would say it was in the spring and I was expecting it.
Q: How do you plan to take advantage of that?
Williams: Take care of my body more. Get bigger and stronger, and be able to play longer in a game.
Q: How much of a reality check is it to face teams like Texas and Georgia?
Williams: It’s like I said, don’t play the logo, play the person in the jersey. You just got to realize it’s just a logo on their chest.
