Phil Loadholt continues to add to Mississippi State’s offensive line this spring.

The first-year Bulldog offensive line coach grabbed another potential starting blocker on Sunday when UTEP center Brennan Smith committed to State. Smith had just entered the transfer portal on Thursday, picked up an offer from MSU and came to Starkville for an official visit almost immediately.

Smith spent the weekend taking in the sights at State and wasted no time committing to the Bulldogs as he announced his decision on Sunday morning. South Carolina had also offered Smith but he cancelled his visit with the Gamecocks after committing to the Bulldogs.

A Pensacola, Fla. native, Smith signed with Austin Peay out of high school and spent three years there. After redshirting his first year on campus in 2021 with action in two games, Smith began to move into the starting rotation as a redshirt freshman.

Smith played in 10 games his second year on campus and started eight games at right tackle. That cemented him at that position for the next year as he started all 12 games in 2023 but he would enter the transfer portal after the season.

Landing in El Paso, Texas, Smith would make the move to center last year with the Miners. He started all 12 games at the position and was slated to anchor the line for his final season but decided to portal again after the spring.

It’s the fifth addition to the roster from the portal this spring as Jeff Lebby and his staff have been active in trying to improve the roster. Smith is the third offensive lineman this spring as he joins Purdue OT Jaekwon Bouldin and Virginia’s Blake Steen who committed over the last week. State also added tight ends Sam West from Indiana and Max Reese from Eastern Michigan.

MSU is after one more offensive lineman to bolster the front and is also recruiting a best available defensive back.
