Going forward, each week, we will have a weekly report on both men and women’s Mississippi State basketball opponents and where fans can find the games on network television, streaming or otherwise. This article will be pinned each week and will also appear as a “sticky” thread on our message boards.

Mississippi State Men’s Hoops

Before the Mississippi State men’s squad entered its current three-game stretch, Bulldog fans and media alike said that MSU really needed to net one of the three out of Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky. The Bulldogs took care of that mark in their first game after the South Carolina loss against the No. 5 ranked Tennessee Volunteers.

Sure, they dropped the Alabama matchup at home in a game that was very much winnable, but it won’t really hurt the Bulldogs’ NET rankings. Neither would a loss to their next opponents, but a win certainly would help.

Mississippi State (12-4) matches up with No. 8 Kentucky (12-3) on the road in Rupp Arena tonight at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN 2.

For State, this is another opportunity for a benchmark win. MSU has been fantastic no neutral floors this season, but haven’t notched a truly resume’ boosting road win, as the Rutgers game was technically a neutral court. What better benchmark than beating the ‘Cats on their home turf?

The men will return home after their trip to Lexington to face off against head coach Jerry Stackhouse and the Vanderbilt Commodores (5-11). That game will tip off at 2:30 on Saturday, Jan. 20 on the SEC Network.

Mississippi State Women’s Hoops

Talk about a bounce back. After starting SEC play off 0-2, head coach Sam Purcell and his squad were able to rattle off two straight wins against Arkansas (away) and Ole Miss (home). The win over TSUN served as Purcell’s first win against Ole Miss during his tenure at Mississippi State.

On the back of Jessika Carter, the women appear to be back on track, whether Geno Auriemma thinks so or not.

It’s a pretty light week for the ladies, as they only have one game between now and Sunday. On Thursday, Jan. 18, the women will play host to the Tennessee Lady Volunteers in Humphrey Coliseum. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be aired on the SEC Network.

At .500 in SEC play, it would be a massive boost for Mississippi State to get over that hump, especially at home. Why? They need as much steam built up as possible with the reigning national champions in LSU visiting later on this month.

For both squad, this is a week full of opportunities. At the moment, their tournament resume’s aren’t bad, but those resume’s can go from good to great if the Bulldogs can string together some wins here as we near the latter portion of the season.
