When NC State announced a home-and-home with Virginia for the 2025 and 2026 football seasons earlier this month, the Wolfpack was going to have to shuffle its non-conference schedule to make it fit.

That, in turn, led to speculation it would be the Appalachian State series that NC State had on the books since 2022. While the Virginia game during the 2025 season was scheduled for the same day, Sept. 6, that meant NC State would have to move the game in Boone, N.C.

That appears to be, in fact, happening.

Appalachian State announced it was adding Boise State to its 2025 and 2027 non-conference schedules Thursday, and it did not include NC State on the former slate. But the Sept. 26, 2026 game set for Raleigh is still on as scheduled.

Though the series will take a year longer to begin, it seems like both parties are willing to honor the agreement with a new date for the game in the Appalachian Mountains.

“I can tell you that we’ve had a lot of conversations with NC State,” Appalachian State Athletic Director Doug Gillin said on the athletic department’s podcast Thursday. “We’re both committed to still playing. We’re going to go down there in ‘26. We’re looking for the right date for them to come up.”

“They had some things that they wanted to look at in ‘25 that would take our home date out of the mix,” Gillin continued. “We’re trying to figure out with them, collaboratively, when we can reschedule that game. I think we’ve got some dates in mind that could work really well for both of us.”

While NC State is working to reschedule its trip to Appalachian State, the Wolfpack has open non-conference dates in 2027, 2029 and 2030 in the next six years. The Pack’s non-conference slate is full in 2025, 2026 and 2028.

NC State will play Campbell, East Carolina, at Notre Dame and Virginia in 2025. It is also set to host App State, Florida and Richmond with trips to Vanderbilt and Virginia in 2026, but one of those games will need to be moved to stay within the 12-game college football regular season schedule.

The Wolfpack’s 2028 non-conference slate includes trips to ECU and Troy with home dates against Campbell and Vanderbilt.

NC State’s series with Virginia, while it is against an ACC opponent in a non-conference setting, seems to be an opportunity for both squads to continue to play one another on the gridiron. They were only set to play twice in the next seven years on the current league schedule.

“Boo [Corrigan] and I talked,” UVa athletic director Carla Williams told The Daily Progress at the ACC spring meetings in Amelia Island, Florida, “thought it would be great. It’s a great rivalry. We want to play ACC games whenever we can. I’ve got a lot of respect for him, for Coach [Dave Doeren] and their program, and it’s mutual.”
