BREAKING: 3-star DL Mykah Newton commits to NC State
NC State wrapped up its 2025 defensive line recruiting class by landing one of its top overall targets. Mykah Newton announced Thursday afternoon that he has committed to the Wolfpack after taking three official visits this summer.
The three-star defensive lineman from Newberry (Fla.) High picked NC State over UCF and Michigan State. He silently committed to the coaching staff in June and announced his decision during a ceremony at his school.
On3 considers Newton the No. 57 defensive lineman in the country and the No. 76 prospect in Florida’s 2025 class. He is the fourth and likely final high school defensive line commit of this cycle, joining Colby Cronk, Omarian Abraham and Makhi Williams-Lee.
NC State offered the 6-3, 250-pound prospect May 13 during a spring surge in the rising senior’s recruitment. He went on to schedule a trio of official visits, kicking off his travel schedule at Michigan State May 31-June 2 before stopping by NC State June 7-9 and UCF June 14-16. He originally set a trip to UConn but did not spend any time with the Huskies.
Newton’s weekend with the Wolfpack left a major impression. He already held a high opinion of the program thanks to his connection with defensive line coach Charley Wiles and former NC State nose tackle Cory Durden, who also attended Newberry High.
“I liked how he developed Cory,” Newton said after picking up the Pack offer earlier this year.
His trip to Raleigh blew the lineman away. Newton shared rave reviews from the trip and complimented his host— redshirt freshman defensive lineman Isaiah Shirley. They quickly hit it off during the visit and will now team up at the collegiate level.

After the visit, he said Shirley was one of the coolest people he has ever met and praised the official visit experience as a whole.
“It went amazing man,” Newton said. “It was cool. I loved the whole coaching staff. They showed some amazing love. I loved every single part of the visit. The area fits me, the players were cool.”
Newton traveled to UCF the next week but silently joined NC State’s class soon after. He also held offers from Georgia Tech and Oregon State.
During his junior season with Newberry High, the lineman recorded 62 total tackles, including 26 for loss, 13 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. The Wolfpack’s No. 15 commit in the 2025 class will play defensive end in Raleigh.
