Carter Trice provides All-American boost to NC State baseball
NC State Baseball received some much-welcomed good news Thursday afternoon with the transfer commitment of former Collegiate Baseball All-American Carter Trice. The utility player will arrive in Raleigh after starting 109 games over two years with Old Dominion.
Trice was named to the Collegiate Baseball All-America second team and the Freshman All-America team after leading the Monarchs in batting average at .355 and hits with 83 in 2021. Perfect Game Baseball also awarded Trice with a Freshman All-America First Team selection.
In his sophomore year, Trice played all over the field, starting 34 games in right field, 13 at second base, three in left field and one at designated hitter. He recorded a .288 batting average, belted 17 home runs and stole 18 bases as a critical part of the team’s lineup. A pair of grand slams, 49 RBIs, 13 doubles, and 11 games with multiple RBIs helped bolster his statistical profile in 2022. Trice’s season led to a spot on the All-Conference USA Second-Team.
Trice announced his decision to transfer via Instagram Thursday afternoon.
“Thank you to my coaches and teammates for my time at Old Dominion but I will be continuing my career at NC State,” his post read.
NC State’s new 5-11, 190 pound Swiss army knife is also familiar with the postseason stage and was an integral part of Old Dominion’s NCAA tournament run in 2021. Trice led the team in batting average once again in the tournament at .294.

Finally, some good news for NC State baseball
Trice’s decision to transfer comes at the end of a particularly brutal week for NC State baseball. After dropping the ACC title game 9-5, the Wolfpack was still regarded as a near-lock to make the tournament by most projections. Monday shocked the program and the rest of the college baseball world when the committee announced a bracket without NC State. The Wolfpack finished the season with a 14-15 ACC record and ended the year 36-21 overall.
To make matters worse, Tommy White, the viral sensation who rocketed his way into the hearts of Wolfpack fans and NC State record books this year, has entered the transfer portal after setting the NCAA record for home runs in a season by a freshman with 27. He also set the NC State record for long balls in a year. Despite speculation that White could be headed for a homecoming with Florida State, The Wolfpacker’s Matt Carter reported Thursday that White entered the portal without a “no contact” designation.
Four other members of the 2022 Wolfpack squad have joined White in the portal. Junior catcher Jacob Godman, redshirt junior outfielder Brady Lavoie, redshirt junior pitcher Logan Adams, and sophomore infielder Eddie Eisert are all also in the portal. Goodman started 14 games this season after transferring from the College of Southern Nevada.
Carter Trice’s ability at the plate, especially if he can replicate some of the form from his freshman season, and his versatility in the field, is a great start to replacing the production lost from the 2022 Wolfpack.
