Chandler Zavala has waiver for extra season denied by NCAA
A NC State football spokesperson Thursday confirmed that fifth-year senior guard Chandler Zavala had his waiver for an extra year of eligibility denied by the NCAA.
Zavala was an offseason graduate transfer addition from Division II Fairmont State, where he was an All-American. He earned the starting job for NC State at left guard during preseason camp.
Zavala started the first five games in 2021, and according to Pro Football Focus (PFF) he had a 71.5 grade on offense during the season. He was named the ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week after his performance against Furman in Week 3.
He had 19 pancake blocks in five games, including four in the double-overtime win over Clemson on Sept. 25, and did not allow a sack all season.
After his injury, Zavala was expected to undergo surgery. His hope was for an extra year of eligibility following his rehab.

In Zavala’s absence, redshirt freshman Dylan McMahon slid over from right guard to start the final seven games of the year on the left side, while redshirt sophomore Derrick Eason filled in at right guard in McMahon’s old spot.
Earlier this month, sophomore left tackle Ikem Ekwonu announced that he was leaving early for the NFL, where Ekwonu is expected to be a high first-round draft pick.
Thus far, Ekwonu and Zavala appear to be the only departures from the offensive line. Third-team All-ACC center Grant Gibson has announced he will use his Super Senior year option.
