NC State football safety Cyrus Fagan is a fan of fishing.

He has noticed the pollen increasing in Raleigh lately, which he hopes is a sign that the temperatures are about to warm up enough to get on the lake. He wouldn’t mind taking a few of his defensive teammates with him, mentioning classmate cornerback Derrek Pitts Jr., fourth-year junior linebacker Drake Thomas and fifth-year redshirt junior corner Teshaun Smith.

There’s a certain characteristic Fagan looks for in a fishing partner.

“You can’t be loud out there,” Fagan said. “You have to be quiet sometimes. You can’t be too loud on the water, have too much fun.”

While Fagan is looking forward to fishing, his true passion and excitement surrounds a return to the football field.

Fagan arrived at NC State last spring. The former blue-chip prospect from Mainland High in Daytona Beach, Fla., played three seasons at Florida State before transferring to the Wolfpack program.

In the NC State season-opening win over South Florida, Fagan intercepted a pass. The next week at Mississippi State, Fagan was elevated to a starting role at strong safety.

However, that would be when his season ended. An injury would cost him the remainder of the year.

“I thought I was going to be back the next week, the next game,” Fagan recalled.

The result is Fagan is back as a fifth-year senior for NC State, but he’s a different person from the one that arrived in Raleigh.

“I’m blessed,” Fagan noted. “I’m happy to be here still even though last season, how it went. It made me a different person. It made me think harder. It made me become a better man just by being out there, by being a coach on the sideline, by helping my teammates.”

Most of all, Fagan learned to appreciate the game.

“I know how it feels to have it taken away,” Fagan said.

Hence why Fagan noted he was “so ready” to get back onto the field. If anyone on the NC State football roster can’t remember the exact date of the 2022 season opener, they can just ask Fagan.

“I’m super excited. I’m ready to play. I’m ready for Sept. 3, [East Carolina],” Fagan stated.

Fagan knows that entering that game the expectations will be high for NC State, but he, for one, is ready to embrace it.

“We’re no pushover,” Fagan said. “We never have been a pushover, even when I wasn’t here. Now that we got that target, they know what’s up.

“They’re going to find out, too.”
