On3 Consensus four-star Darion Rivers commits to NC State football
In the span of a little over a month, West Charlotte (N.C.) High standout lineman Darion Rivers has gone from sleeper on the recruiting trail to a commitment for NC State.
Rivers announced his pledge to the Wolfpack Thursday evening via Twitter.
Rivers becomes the second verbal commitment for NC State football recruiting in the 2023 class, joining On3 Consensus three-star quarterback Lex Thomas from Wake Forest (N.C.) Heritage High.
The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Rivers is rated by the On3 Consensus as a four-star talent, the No. 23 offensive tackle nationally and the No. 11 prospect from the state of North Carolina.
The On3 Consensus is an equally weighted industry-generated average of the four major recruiting sites — On3, Rivals, ESPN and 247Sports.
On3’s own rankings has Rivers listed as a four star prospect, the No. 22 offensive tackle nationally and the No. 10 player in the state’s 2023 class.

Darion Rivers’ recruitment with NC State
Rivers, who also plays basketball, was offered by NC State Jan. 30 while on a junior day visit. Four days prior, NC State head coach Dave Doeren and receivers coach Joker Phillips had stopped by his high school, West Charlotte.

Since then, Rivers had also been offered by Liberty and was receiving interest from South Carolina. Last fall, Rivers took in football games at Clemson and Georgia Tech.
Rivers plays both ways and is coached by Sam Greiner, who recently starred on the CBS show “The Amazing Race” and previously coached Harding High in Charlotte to a state title.
