Dave Doeren shares update on NC State QB Devin Leary
NC State pulled off a comeback win over Florida State Saturday night, leaving Carter-Finley Stadium with a 19-17 win after starting quarterback Devin Leary left the game with an upper body injury in the third quarter. After the primetime victory, NC State head coach Dave Doeren shared an update on Leary’s status.
The X-Rays came back negative, and he will get an MRI tomorrow that will reveal more about the extent of the injury.
“He got hit while he was throwing in motion, so they’re X-raying that entire part,” Doeren said after the game.
A Florida State defender landed a very hard hit on the Wolfpack signal caller as he released the ball on a passing attempt, leading to the injury.
“They’ll MRI him tomorrow, and we’ll be able to tell you more after that, but [it is] positive that the X rays were negative,” Doeren said.
Leary later returned to sideline without pads on with his arm in a sling.
“Hopefully it’s just a muscle strain, and we’ll have him back soon,” Doeren said. “But say your prayers for him tonight. I know he’s down. He’s a competitive dude. He wanted to be out there.
The hit on Leary led to a roughing the passer penalty on the Seminoles. Prior to that play, the NC State star quarterback had just led the Pack on its first touchdown drive of the game, finding wide receiver Darryl Jones in the end zone from 10 yards out at the end of an impressive drive to pull the Wolfpack within 7 points of Florida State. Up until the injury, Leary completed 10-21 passes for 131 yards.

NC State faces an undefeated Syracuse team on the road next week, a challenging matchup against a ranked team. The Wolfpack’s bye week follows the matchup against the Orange and then a Thursday night showdown with Virginia Tech.
If Leary does miss an extended period of time, NC State will likely turn to backup quarterback Jack Chambers, who played the rest of the game for the Wolfpack tonight. His only pass of the half fell incomplete, but he did pick up 39 yards on the ground as the Wolfpack focussed on controlling possession.
“I’m very proud of Jack Chambers coming in and leading the team the way he did,” Doeren said.
NC State defensive back Devan Boykin, who is locker neighbors with the backup quarterback, complemented Chambers’ performance and expressed confidence in the graduate transfer’s abilities.
“We all believe highly in Jack,” Boykin said after the game.
Chambers and the rest of the offense’s efforts led to consecutive made field goals by Chris Dunn— who finished the day 4-4 and remained perfect on the season. His final field goal proved to be the winning kick, and NC State moved to 5-1.
