BREAKING: Oklahoma RB Daylan Smothers commits to NC State
NC State picked up a commitment from former top in-state running back Daylan “Hollywood” Smothers Tuesday evening (Jan. 9). He is the No. 11 portal commit of the Pack’s 2024 class and bolstered a top-10 transfer class.
After spending one season at Oklahoma and redshirting after four games, Smothers entered the portal and committed to NC State. He carried the ball 11 times for 42 yards in his lone season with the Sooners.
Smothers is already enrolled in classes at NC State. The former Charlotte (N.C.) Chambers High and West Charlotte High star took just one public trip after declaring his intention to enter the portal Dec. 4 — a weekend trip to see the Wolfpack. He did not share any offers during his portal recruitment.
NC State made Smothers a top priority in the 2023 class before he eventually committed to and signed with the Sooners. Prior to joining the Big-12 program’s class, he released a final four list of Oklahoma, NC State, Florida State and Alabama. He also held high school offers from Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee and many other programs.

“The people around [at NC State] are all smiles and nothing but love,” Smothers said during his high school official visit with the Wolfpack. “That’s the most important thing to me, being around positive people.”
Listed at 5-11, 190 pounds, On3 considers him the No. 24 running back in the transfer portal and the No. 252 prospect overall. Out of high school, the On3 Industry Ranking considered him a four-star prospect in the 2023 class, the No. 26 running back and the No. 14 recruit in North Carolina.
Smothers joins a packed portal class for the Pack that includes wide receiver Noah Rogers, quarterback Grayson McCall, cornerback Devon Marshall, tight end Justin Joly, defensive back Tamarcus Cooley, wide receiver Wesley Grimes, cornerback Corey Coley Jr. and offensive linemen Valen Erickson and Zeke Correll. He also teams up in the backfield with elite transfer running back Jordan Waters.
