DB Ja’Had Carter no longer with NC State program
Senior defensive back Ja’Had Carter is no longer with the NC State program, an athletics spokesperson confirmed Monday afternoon.
Carter was removed from the online roster and was not listed in this week’s game notes. He is the second player to depart the program midseason, joining defensive end Red Hibbler, who left the Pack after four games.
Carter, an Ohio State transfer, appeared in five games with the Wolfpack. He most recently played two snaps against Syracuse, the program where he began his collegiate career.
The Richmond, Va., native logged 15 total tackles and a pass defended in his time at NC State. He played 194 total snaps, most of which came at nickel in the Wolfpack’s 3-3-5 defense. Carter started against Tennessee, Louisiana Tech and Clemson before he was surpassed by redshirt freshman defensive back Tamarcus Cooley at nickel.
Carter’s role seemed to diminish over the last two weeks. In addition to the two snaps against the Orange, Carter played a season-low 27 in the 34-30 loss to Wake Forest in Week 6.

Cooley, a Maryland transfer, will likely remain in that starting spot moving forward. He will serve a suspension for the first half at Cal this weekend due to a targeting ejection in the fourth quarter this past weekend.
NC State will be thin at nickel for the final five games of the season. The Pack will look to redshirt sophomore cornerback Isaiah Crowell as an option at the position after he played 20 snaps at nickel against the Orange as NC State finished the game without Cooley on the field. Crowell logged four tackles, including one for a loss, in his appearance.
The Wolfpack can also look to junior cornerback Devon Marshall to play nickel, the spot NC State initially thought the Villanova transfer would play this season. He has played mostly at outside corner with sophomore Brandon Cisse injured, but Marshall has logged 26 snaps in the slot this season.
