Dereon Seabron awaits NBA Draft Thursday evening
Thursday is the NBA Draft, and NC State basketball has one player who may hear his name called. Redshirt sophomore guard Dereon Seabron would be picked in the latter half of the second round, if he is selected. That is the consensus of most two-round mock NBA Drafts released this week.
Sam Vecenie of The Athletic has Seabron rated the No. 50 overall prospect on his big board.
“He doesn’t have the threat of a catch-and-shoot jumper right now and can’t pull-up anywhere,” Vecenie wrote. “He’s so talented as a driver that he can derive 17 points per game simply by attacking the cup. That’s why I have him as a top-50 guy in the class. If Seabron ever learns to shoot and is willing to engage defensively, he has substantial upside. He’s too much of a project in both of those capacities for me to give him a guaranteed contract. But he’d be among my first calls as a two-way player, because if he does improve, he has a chance to really succeed at a high level.”
Vecenie has Seabron being picked with the 54th overall pick (there are 58 selections in the draft) by the Washington Wizards in a choice that originally belonged to the Dallas Mavericks.
ESPN.com’s Jonathan Givony has Seabron being taken in the second round by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 56th overall pick in a choice that originally belonged to the Miami Heat.
BleacherReport.com’s Jonathan Wasserman has Seabron going slightly higher, three picks prior at No. 53, to the Boston Celtics, who recently lost in the NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors.
One of the highest projections for Seabron comes from USA Today’s Cody Taylor, who has the Pack star going with the No. 49 overall pick belonging to the Sacramento Kings, a selection acquired from the Chicago Bulls. Taylor’s counterpart at USA Today, Bryan Kalbrosky, has Seabron three picks sooner at No. 46 to the Detroit Pistons.

However, Kyle Boone of CBSSports.com did not have Seabron taken in his updated two-round mock draft. Neither did Sports Illustrated’s Jeremy Woo in his final projections.
Dereon Seabron Turned Pro Early
Seabron was second-team All-ACC last season. He led NC State in scoring (17.3 points), rebounding (8.2 boards), assists (102) and steals (44). His 12 double-doubles were the second most in the ACC.
After originally entering the NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility, a string of workouts and performances at the NBA Draft combine convinced Seabron, four years removed from high school, to pursue his professional ambitions.
On3 called Seabron one of the winners of the NBA Draft combine:
“During the games is when his unique abilities showed. Seabron played primarily on the ball, and he lived in the paint. He showed he could make a play in the paint as well, whether finishing at the rim, drawing the foul, or creating for a teammate. Seabron averaged 16 points through the two scrimmages finishing 11-18 from the field. His energy was infectious as he also added ten rebounds, five assists, and two steals.”
