Former NC State OL Joe Thuney earns third straight Pro Bowl selection
Despite making a position change late in the season to help bolster the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive line, former NC State standout Joe Thuney was named to the AFC Pro Bowl Games roster, the NFL announced Thursday morning.
Thuney, a third-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, will make his third straight appearance in the Pro Bowl. He was selected as a guard, even though he has played the last three games at tackle for Kansas City.
The Kettering, Ohio, native has earned above-average marks from Pro Football Focus for his standout play this fall. Thuney has logged a 79.7 overall grade, including an 81.9 pass-blocking mark as he has yet to allow a sack this season, which if it holds would be the first time since 2018 that he’s done that for an entire season.
Thuney had a six-game stretch earlier this season where he did not allow a single pressure on star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. His total pressure numbers appear to be inflated by his first game at tackle, which was a 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 15. Thuney was credited with 10 of his 25 total pressures in one game, but has since allowed just four in the previous two games combined.
The 6-foot-5, 304-pound versatile offensive lineman has started all 16 games for Kansas City this fall as he has become a staple on the offensive line for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions

Thuney’s NFL resume continues to grow since he left Raleigh. He is a four-time Super Bowl champion between his time with the New England Patriots and Chiefs, while he was also a 2023 First Team All-Pro selection. Thuney is a part of the Patriots’ All-2010s Team and on the franchise’s All-Dynasty team for his five seasons protecting Tom Brady.
At NC State, Thuney was a First Team All-American and a First Team All-ACC selection during the 2015 season, his final campaign with the Wolfpack.
The Pro Bowl Games will remain two days of games and skills competitions, including dodgeball and flag football. The NFL changed the format in 2022, opting to leave the traditional game format and decided to introduce the games that display players’ individual skills instead.
