How much former NC State DC Tony Gibson will make as Marshall’s head coach
Former NC State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson dreamed of running his own program, and after six seasons with the Wolfpack, he’s now the head coach at Marshall.
The Sun Belt Conference program will officially introduce Gibson as the team’s 32nd head coach in program history Thursday afternoon. It will be his first collegiate head coaching job of his career, while he did kickstart his football journey leading Gilmer County (W.Va.) High in 1995.
“I’m super excited for Tony,” NC State coach Dave Doeren said Sunday night. “He’s earned it, deserves it. He’s been a great staff member and friend. Throughout his time in college football, he’s made his mark. This has always been one of his goals. For me, it’s a proud moment.”
As Gibson prepares for his next step in his coaching career, he is set to make $1 million a year over the duration of his five-year contract, per the memo of understanding he signed with Marshall on Dec. 3, TheWolfpacker.com obtained via an open records request.
The Van, W.Va., native made $1.5 million this past season at NC State and was set to make the same salary for the 2025 and 2026 campaigns before he departed for Marshall, per his contract obtained by an open records request. He was the 26th-highest paid assistant coach in FBS, according to the USA Today assistant coaches database.

Gibson, who owed NC State a $25,000 buyout, will have that paid by the Thundering Herd. He can make up to $1.5 million a season through performance-based incentives, which were not available in the memo of understanding.
In addition to his annual pay, Gibson has a salary pool of $1.9 million to hire his full-time assistant coaches and support staff at Marshall. His contract buyout begins at $4 million and decreases by $1 million every year following until the end of the 2028 season.
