Instant observations: UNC races past NC State in blowout, Pack yet to win on road

CHAPEL HILL — NC State’s trip to the ice cream parlor will have to wait another night … again. The Pack, which hasn’t won a true road game in 368 days, didn’t snap that streak in its annual trek down I-40 to the Dean Smith Center. Instead, UNC rolled past NC State 97-73 on a snowy Wednesday night in Chapel Hill, the most points allowed by Wolfpack this season. At first, it seemed like the two inches of winter weather would keep the Tar Heels’ home gym relatively quiet with deteriorating road conditions. But instead, UNC allowed anyone into the game for free, which resulted in a raucous building filled with Tar Heel students. The deafening noise, at times, seemed to rattle the Wolfpack early and often. NC State fell behind by 22 just over 12 minutes into the game and the game was effectively over after that. NC State shot 45.8 percent from the field, including 33.3 percent from 3-point distance. UNC, meanwhile, logged a blistering 57.4 percent shooting effort with eight made triples. Senior guard Jayden Taylor led the Pack with 19 points, while senior wing Dontrez Styles added 18 in his return to the Dean Dome. The Wolfpack has yet to win a game outside of Raleigh this season as it fell to 0-10 away from home. Here are a pair of observations from the Pack’s 13th loss in the last 16 games.
