NC State men’s basketball picked up a transfer portal commitment from rising senior guard Kam Woods. The HBCU All-American was a star for North Carolina A&T last season and will now fill the final remaining scholarship spot on the Wolfpack’s roster.

Woods announced his decision on Twitter Sunday afternoon, joining NC State after one season with the Aggies.

During the 2022-2023 season, he averaged 17.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior guard earned second-team HBCU All-America honors last year.

His commitment officially fills the Wolfpack’s roster for the upcoming season following On3 four-star guard Trey Parker’s decision to reclassify to the 2024 cycle. This is Woods’ third time transferring after previously playing for Troy and Northwest Florida State College, so he could have to sit out 2023-2024 unless he receives a waiver from the NCAA or joins the program as a grad transfer.

During his freshman year at Troy, Woods started 12 games, scoring 10.3 points and grabbing 2.9 rebounds per game. He shot 35.6 percent from the field, 70.2 percent from the line and 28.6 percent from three.

Woods then spent the following year at Northwest Florida State, helping the team win the junior college national championship. He averaged 11 points per game, shooting 40 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from deep.

After arriving at NC A&T, he posted career-high numbers and received second-team All-CAA honors.

The guard is from Bessemer, Alabama, and attended Pinson Valley High. According to his Northwest Florida State bio, he averaged 38.1 points per game as a senior in high school and won the Alabama Class 6 Player of the Year award twice.

Transfer portal background information

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.
