Katelyn Tuohy adds two more national titles
When the question arises who is the greatest athlete in NC State history, many legends of the past will come to mind — David Thompson, Philip Rivers, Julie Shea, etc. Add to the debate long distance runner Katelyn Tuohy, who continued building on her resume by winning her third and fourth individual national titles in the span of a calendar year.
Last summer, Tuohy took first place in the 5,000-meter race during the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championship. She followed up this fall by winning the individual title in the NCAA Cross Country Championships, where she also led NC State to a second straight team national title.
Tuohy captured the national title in a course record time in Stillwater, Okla.
Tuohy won the 2023 Honda Award for Cross Country and was a finalist for the Collegiate Women Athlete of the Year. She also won the ACC Women’s Performer of the Year after also taking the ACC meet and the NCAA Southeast Regional, and additionally was selected as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Women’s Athlete of the Year.
Then on Friday and Saturday, Tuohy added some indoor track and field hardware to her already filled trophy case.
On Friday, Katelyn Tuohy won the NCAA title in the 5,000-meter indoor race with a time of 16:09.65 in Albuquerque, N.M. Earlier in the winter, Tuohy had set a school record in the race with a time of 15:15.92.

Then on Saturday, Tuohy won the 3,000-meter indoor NCAA championship, a race in which Tuohy had previously set a NCAA record in February with her time of 8:35.20. She stopped the clock in 9:10.07 in Albuquerque at the NCAA meet.
The junior had two teammates also race well in those events. Senior Kelsey Chmiel was seventh in the 3K and senior Sam Bush was ninth. Chmiel was additionally fourth in the 5K and senior Sydney Seymour came in eighth.
Overall, the NC State women’s indoor track and field team finished sixth, the best in program history.
