NC State baseball may be in the Super Regionals, but the Wolfpack has not wasted any time in the transfer portal. Former Campbell outfielder Dalen Thompson announced his commitment to the Pack on Wednesday afternoon, the first portal pickup for the 2025 season.

Thompson, a rising senior, hit .313 with 13 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 44 runs scored and 47 RBI in his first full season as a consistent starter for the Camels. He appeared in 50 games with 46 starts, after he made just 20 starts in his first two seasons. Thompson struck out 42 times with 30 walks this past season with an on-base percentage of .396.

The Dunn, N.C., native was also consistent as an outfielder, too. He logged 81 putouts with five assists and just one error for a .989 fielding percentage this season.

Thompson went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two walks in the Camels’ 11-7 win at NC State in 12 innings on April 16 this season. He hit in the clean-up spot that night and was effective against the Wolfpack’s pitching. Thompson also set a career high with three stolen bases against the Pack.

The outfielder’s power surge this season was a first. The 10 home runs he clubbed were the first of his career, powering the Camels to an 8-0 record in games in which he left the yard. Thompson had a career-best two home runs and seven RBI in a 15-2 win over Charleston Southern on March 19 — including a grand slam. He also had a multi-home run game against Bucknell.

Thompson set a career best with four hits at No. 11 North Carolina on May 7. He logged three RBI against the Tar Heels, his now rival, in that contest.

Before this spring, Thompson hit .328 with two doubles and a triple in 35 games during the 2023 season. He had a .217 batting average with three doubles and two RBI as a freshman in 2022.

Thompson logged a career .379 batting average at Erwin (N.C.) Triton High School before he kicked off his collegiate career.
