Tommy White, four others choose to enter the transfer portal
After one of the most decorated freshman seasons in college baseball history, NC State slugger Tommy White appears headed elsewhere. White entered the transfer portal Thursday morning, ending over 24 hours of speculation about his future amidst rumors of a potential move to Florida State.
White, who earned the nickname “Tommy Tanks,” had a monster rookie campaign, batting .362 at the plate with 27 homers, the most ever by a college baseball freshman. He drove in 74 runs and scored 54 while adding 12 doubles and hitting for a slugging percentage of .757. White also had an on-base percentage of .425.
His 27 homers were also a school record for most in a single season at NC State.
Although rumors have persisted of a potential move to Florida State, White, who is a native of St. Pete Beach, Fla., does not have the “no contact” designation in the transfer portal. Typically when a player is listed as do not contact they have a destination or small list of schools already in mind.
White was primarily a designated hitter this past season at NC State, but he had experienced playing both first and third base. The 6-foot, 242-pounder was considered an elite third base prospect coming out of IMG Academy in the 2022 class, but started the season at first base for the Wolfpack.
A brief stint at third base ended when White suffered a shoulder injury diving for a grounder.
White delivered several electric moments with his rare power. He hit three homers in his career debut and followed up with home runs in each of his next two contests.
White added four more homers in his second weekend series of the season.
At Louisville, White hit four homers over three days, including two mammoth shots to left. When he homered in his next game against East Carolina, the Pirates chose to intentionally walk White to load the bases, setting up a grand slam by Josh Hood in the next at bat.

In the ACC Tournament against Miami, White hit three homers, tying the record for a single game in the event, and then he added another blast in the first inning of the semifinals win over Pittsburgh.
White is one of five NC State baseball players to put their names into the portal, per a source.
Also transferring are junior catcher Jacob Godman, redshirt junior pitcher Logan Adams, redshirt junior outfielder Brady Lavoie and sophomore infielder Eddie Eisert.
Godman was a part-time starter while Adams was used at times as a midweek starter. Eisert (21 games) and Lavoie (nine) received limited at bats.
NC State finished the season 36-21 and was stunningly left out of the NCAA Tournament after reaching the ACC Tournament finals.
