NC State basketball now knows its opponent for the Wolfpack’s opening game of the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Virginia Tech scored the final 3 points of a 67-64 win over Notre Dame to advance to the second round and face NC State.

The Hokies, seeded 10th in the ACC Tournament, improved to 19-13 on the season with the victory. NC State, the six seed, will tip off against Virginia Tech at approximately 9:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

In the only regular season meeting between the two teams, NC State prevailed 73-69 in Blacksburg, Va., on Jan. 7.

The Wolfpack held a 9-point lead with 1:03 to go in the matchup, but Virginia Tech guard Darius Maddox kept the home team in the game by scoring 11-consecutive points for the Hokies to make it a 3-point game with 16 seconds remaining. NC State hit 8 free throws in the final minute to help secure the victory.

The Wolfpack had raced out to a 36-22 halftime lead before having to hold on in the final minute.

Virginia Tech played that game without an injured Hunter Cattoor, who averaged 10.7 points per game during the regular season and is the Hokies’ best three-point shooter.

Virginia Tech ended the regular season with back-to-back lopsided wins and is now riding a three-game winning streak heading into Wednesday’s showdown with NC State.

The winner of the contest will advance to the ACC Tournament quarterbacks against third-seeded Clemson. The Tigers swept NC State during the regular season, including winning by 25 points in Raleigh on the Wolfpack’s Senior Day.

Clemson also swept Virginia Tech, winning in Blacksburg by 3 points and then hitting a buzzer-beater to knock of the Hokies by a point at home.

NC State basketball is 22-9 overall and could use what will be a Quad 2 win over Virginia Tech to feel more secure about its chances for an at-large selection into the NCAA Tournament.

In other action Wednesday, 12th-seeded Georgia Tech made a free throw with 0.3 seconds left to break a 60-60 tie and prevail by a point over No. 13 seed Florida State. The Yellow Jackets will face fifth-seeded Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Boston College, the No. 10 seed, rolled in the second half after trailing at halftime to Louisville and rout No. 15 seed Louisville, 80-62. BC will play North Carolina on Wednesday evening, one game prior to NC State taking the court vs. Virginia Tech.
