NC State basketball could not overcome a nightmare start and fell 62-59 to Virginia Tech at PNC Arena in Raleigh on Wednesday evening.

The loss knocked the Pack to under .500 at 9-10 on the season and 2-6 in the ACC. The Hokies improved 10-7 and 2-4.

NC State made just 1 of its first 13 shots from the field while falling behind 19-2 to start the game, and it trailed by as many as 18 at 31-13 before going into the halftime down 35-21.

The second half saw a much more spirited effort from NC State, outscoring the Hokies 13-5 out of the break to climb back into the contest, but it was never able to reach Virginia Tech.

Star redshirt sophomore wing Dereon Seabron had a chance when he went to the line for a one-and-one with 4:39 left to potentially tie the game at 59-59, but he missed the front end. Seabron later drove and scored with 20.3 seconds left to cut Virginia Tech’s lead to 60-59.

Hokies freshman guard Sean Pedulla stepped to the line and made two free throws in a one-and-one situation with 12.4 seconds to go for the game’s final points.

After NC State called a timeout with 8.7 seconds to go, freshman guard Terquavion Smith had a shot to potentially tie but his three-pointer was off the mark.

Four players scored all but six of NC State’s points, led by senior forward Jericole Hellems’ 15. Smith added 14, while Seabron had 13 and off the bench junior guard Casey Morsell contributed 11.

Virginia Tech senior forward Justyn Mutts led the way for the Hokies with 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while senior forward Keve Aluma added a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards.

NC State basketball is next scheduled to return to action Saturday at 4 p.m. against Virginia inside PNC Arena in Raleigh. The game is set to be televised by ACC Network
