In a highlight of how volatile the NCAA’s NET rankings can still be in early January, NC State basketball jumped 38 spots in one day after its 68-63 win over Virginia Tech on Tuesday evening.

The victory also qualifies as a quad one win and stopped the fall, at least temporarily, that the team has been suffering. NC State debuted at No. 136 in the initial release, and on Dec. 19 in the most recent NET report update was at No. 129.

A five-game losing streak had seen the Wolfpack fall all the way to No. 181.

According to the NCAA’s website, the NET rankings use two factors:

“The Team Value Index (TVI), which is a result-based feature that rewards teams for beating quality opponents, particularly away from home, as well as an adjusted net efficiency rating. The adjusted efficiency is a team’s net efficiency, adjusted for strength of opponent and location (home/away/neutral) across all games played. For example, a given efficiency value (net points per 100 possessions) against stronger opposition rates higher than the same efficiency against lesser opponents and having a certain efficiency on the road rates higher than the same efficiency at home.”

The ACC has been slowly gaining a little traction in the NET, with now nine teams ranked in the top 100 and two more teams knocking on the door.

More important than the rankings are the quad systems to which the NET is used to sort teams.

While the Wolfpack did pick up a quad one victory in Blacksburg, it also possesses two quad three defeats in a home loss to Florida State and neutral-court defeat against Richmond. The setback to Wright State in PNC Arena also qualifies as a quad four L.
