The start of the NC State basketball season is less than three weeks away. The Wolfpack will tip off the 2022-23 season when Austin Peay comes to PNC Arena in Raleigh for the opener on Monday, Nov. 7. That is the first of four straight home games before heading to the challenging Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas over Thanksgiving weekend.

The preseason KenPom projections were released earlier this week to add to the anticipation, and on Tuesday the projected order of finish in the conference came out, with NC State picked to finish 10th.

The Wolfpacker’s Matt Carter and Matt Coe recorded a podcast Wednesday to preview the upcoming NC State basketball season.

Among the topics discussed included:

• A look at the pecking orders within the ACC. Did the writers get it right when they projected NC State in the bottom half of the conference? What teams look to be the class of the league, and who are some teams that may surprise?

• Breaking down the NC State roster by starting with the high-upside potential of a backcourt featuring sophomore Terquavion Smith and super senior Jarkel Joiner, a transfer addition from Ole Miss. Where does senior Casey Morsell fit into the equation, and is a three-guard lineup likely in the future for NC State?

• What are the areas that Smith needs to improve to take that next step into becoming an elite ACC player and potential NBA Draft lottery selection after the year is over?

• How NC State head coach Kevin Keatts has almost seemingly flipped the switch by loading up on bodies in the frontcourt, where quantity is not an issue at the four and five positions in the lineup. But is NC State vulnerable is an injury strikes the backcourt? Is sophomore Breon Pass the only potential backup option at the guard position?
