The NC State basketball took a cue from the women’s team by going on a dominant run on the way to a 77-63 victory over visiting Virginia that was more lopsided than the score may suggest.

Two days after the women’s team went on a blistering 31-4 fourth quarter run to rally from 14 down and stun No. 4 Louisville, the men’s team went on a 25-6 run to end the first half against Virginia, turning a 26-18 deficit into a 43-32 advantage at halftime.

NC State then extended that lead with a 10-3 spurt to begin the second half and was never threatened by the Cavaliers on its way to a win that was lopsided enough to allow NC State head coach Kevin Keatts to get walk-ons Chase Graham and Alex Nunnally into the game.

NC State led by as much as 21 points at 72-51

The Wolfpack did it behind a first half barrage of three-pointers, making 9 of 14 against Virginia’s normally stingy defense. NC State never cooled off, finishing the game at 60.0 percent shooting overall and 54.5 percent on threes (12 of 22).

Four of the five starters scored in double figures, led by senior forward Jericole Hellems’ 21 points and freshman guard Terquavion Smith’s 20. Hellems went 5 of 9 on three-point attempts while Smith was 4 of 7.

Playing against his former team, junior guard Casey Morsell, back into the starting lineup for the first time since returning from a sprained ankle suffered against Nebraska on Dec. 1, added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Redshirt sophomore wing Dereon Seabron had 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals in an all-around effort.

NC State pulled away despite Virginia’s own hot shooting from three. The Cavs made 10 of 17 attempts from beyond the arc (58.8 percent), but was just 13 of 38 inside the arc and made just 10 of 29 shots overall (34.5 percent) in the second half.

The victory improved NC State basketball to 10-10 overall and 3-6 in the ACC while Virginia fell to 11-8 and 5-4. The Wolfpack is next scheduled to play at Notre Dame Wednesday evening for a 9 p.m. tipoff. The game is set to be televised on RSN.
