NC State will recognize the storied career accomplishments of former player Bill Cowher this fall by inducting him into the program’s ring of honor. He will be recognized before the Wolfpack’s Sept. 29 matchup against Louisville.

Per the GoPack.com press release, he is the only former NC State athlete in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Cowher won Super Bowl XL as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Bill Cowher has left an indelible mark on the game of football and is certainly beloved by Wolfpack Nation,” athletic director Boo Corrigan said in the press release. “It is an absolute privilege to recognize his remarkable contributions and celebrate his outstanding career.”

Cowher has spoken multiple times at NC State, most recently for a high school coaches clinic earlier this year. Head coach Dave Doeren recognized and complemented his contributions to the program.

“Throughout his career, Bill Cowher has epitomized what Wolfpack football is all about,” Doeren said in the press release.. “He is a true mentor, leader, and icon in the coaching profession, and we are so proud to be able to honor him in Carter-Finley Stadium alongside other NC State legends.”

From the 1975-1978 football seasons, Cowher suited up at linebacker for the Wolfpack. He finished his career with 371 tackles, which ranks No. 7 in program history, and he still holds the single season record with 195 in one season.

“What a tremendous honor it is to be inducted to the Ring Of Honor in Carter-Finley Stadium,” said Cowher. “It is a legendary list of past honorees. I came to NC State as a boy from Crafton, PA, and left four years later a man. Thanks to the tutelage and guidance of so many – Lou Holtz, Bo Rein & Chuck Amato, to name a few. This is a very SPECIAL recognition. Go Pack!”

Cowher went on to play 5 seasons in the NFL before going into coaching. He took the Steelers job in 1992 and never looked back, holding the position for 15 years. During that tenure, he won his division 8 times and made it to the Super Bowl twice, winning once.

The NC State game against Louisville is a Friday evening contest at Carter-Finley Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the contest can be viewed on ESPN. That is if the fifth of five straight Wolfpack games that can be seen nationally on various channels and is the second consecutive Friday night, ESPN broadcasts on the slate.
