For the fourth time in the past six seasons, NC State football has a consensus All-American. This time it is super senior kicker Christopher Dunn, whose decision to use his extra season of eligibility under the Covid rules has paid off with a historic year. Dunn was also selected as the Lou Groza Award winner, given to college football’s top kicker.

Dunn has now been named All-American by the Associated Press, ESPN, CBS, Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), The Athletic, Walter Camp and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

Had Dunn been chosen first-team All-American by The Sporting News instead of Stanford’s Joshua Karty, Dunn would have been a unanimous consensus All-American.

The recognitions comes after Dunn set several ACC career records. He became the league’s all-time leader in points scored with 479 and field goals made with 93. His .960 kicking percentage in 2022 was second best nationally, and he led the conference in scoring and field goals. Dunn tied for the national lead in field goals per game.

In 2022, Dunn made 24 of 25 field goal attempts, including 10 that were 40 yards are longer, two of which were over 50 yards. The highlight of the season may have come when Dunn made 4 field goals, including matching his career-long of 53 yards, in a 19-17 victory over Florida State on Oct. 8.

Dunn joined former NC State All-American kicker Marc Primanti in winning the Lou Groza Award. Primanti was honored in 1996 when he made all 20 of his field goal attempts and each of his 24 extra points.

Last season, NC State left tackle Ikem Ekwonu joined former center Jim Ritcher in 1979 and defensive end Bradley Chubb in 2017 as unanimous consensus All-Americans from the Wolfpack.

Ritcher’s No. 51 is retired from NC State football, and he was an inaugural member of the school’s Hall of Fame.

Chubb’s No. 9 is also permanently honored, and he is currently a star in the NFL with the Denver Broncos.

The other consensus All-American since 2017 that from NC State that Dunn joined was center Garrett Bradbury in 2018. Bradbury, who like Chubb and Ekwonu was a first-round NFL Draft pick, won the Rimington Trophy that season as college football’s top center.

Dunn joins Primanti as the only kickers at NC State to be a consensus All-American. Others to have received All-American mention in their Wolfpack careers include Steve Videtich in 1994 and Gerald Warren in 1967 and 1968.

Christopher Dunn has one last opportunity to kick for NC State, when the Pack lines up for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte on Dec. 30 for a noon kickoff on ESPN against Maryland.
