The uniform craze in college football can probably be attributed to Oregon’s colorful combinations that were mixed and matched starting around the 1996 season. Now every team, No. 10-ranked NC State football included, tries to vary the combinations of the school colors on a seemingly weekly basis.

On Thursday, NC State unveiled their uniform combination for Saturday’s 2022 ACC opener. The Wolfpack is a touchdown underdog heading into the 7:30 kickoff on ABC at No. 5 Clemson. The game will be televised on ABC, and alternate telecast led by Pat McAfee will be shown on ESPN2.

ESPN’s College GameDay will also broadcast on location at Clemson in the morning.

Clemson has yet to reveal what their uniform combination will be.

NC State is going with a familiar look for the road contest.

Ever since NC State football switched to the Tuffy head logo over the block ‘S’ during the 2017 season, red helmets, white jerseys and red pants have become a popular away-game look.

The first time that combination was worn was in the 2017 Hyundai Sun Bowl against Arizona State, which was a lopsided 52-31 win for NC State. That game is one of several notable victories for the Wolfpack wearing the look.

A year later in 2018, NC State broke out the combo on a wet, soggy day in Chapel Hill for the regular season finale against North Carolina. Running back Reggie Gallaspy Jr. rushed for 5 touchdowns in a 34-28 overtime win over the Tar Heels in what proved to be the final game of the Larry Fedora-era for the Heels. Fedora went 3-4 in his 7 seasons for UNC against NC State.

The Pack however did not repeat the good bowl fortunes with that color combination. In the Gator Bowl on New Year’s Eve, Texas A&M trounced the Pack, 52-13.

During the injury-riddled 2019 campaign, NC State wore red helmets and pants with white jersey just once, the ACC-opening 31-13 loss at Florida State.

One of the biggest wins in the Dave Doeren era at NC State football happened in 2020, when NC State broke out the same look for the first of 3 times on the road. Fifth-year redshirt junior quarterback Devin Leary led a late, game-winning touchdown drive in the Wolfpack’s 30-29 win at a ranked Pittsburgh squad.

A week later, NC State won 38-21 at Virginia with those uniforms, but the good luck ran out in a 48-21 loss at UNC. That was the first game played after Leary broke his leg in a win over Duke.

Last season, the Wolfpack went 1-1 with the uniform combination. NC State won 33-7 at Boston College but lost 31-30 a week later at Miami.

Overall, the red helmet with Tuffy logo, white jersey and red pants has a record of 5-4 in games away from Carter-Finley Stadium.
