The NC State football season opener for 2022 is at East Carolina on Sept. 3 — or 50 days away from Friday. The Wolfpacker continues its countdown for the season with a note about the number 50.

50: Significant moments involving the number 50 in NC State football history

• No. 50 for NC State football is one of the most visible players on the roster — super senior center Grant Gibson.

Gibson was an On3 Consensus four-star coming out of Mallard Creek High in Charlotte but was actually recruited to play defensive tackle for NC State. GIbson, however, played offensive line primarily as a senior at Mallard Creek, and that is obviously where he eventually ended up at NC State.

Gibson broke out as a starter in 2019 and was the only Wolfpack player to run first string every game on offense. A year later, Gibson took his game to another level. Pro Football Focus (PFF) rated Gibson the ninth best center in the country after he allowed just four quarterback pressures in 443 pass protection opportunities for NC State in 2020.

Last fall, Gibson was voted third-team All-ACC while extending his streak of consecutive games started to 36.

Off the field, Gibson is also one of the unquestioned leaders of NC State. He has been a team captain for each of the past two years.

• One of the best players to ever wear No. 50 was former linebacker Stephen Tulloch. As part of the most heralded NC State football recruiting class signed, Tulloch would turn out to be one of the most accomplished stars of the group.

Tulloch was named first-team All-ACC in 2005 when he had 20.5 tackles for loss, which is tied for sixth most in a single season at NC State. He ranks seventh all-time in program history for career tackles for losses with 40. That despite only playing three seasons before turning pro early.

To cap his collegiate career, Tulloch was the MVP of the Meineke Car Care Bowl win over South Florida in Charlotte, during which he led a defensive effort that helped give USF its first shutout in school history.

A fourth round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans, Tulloch played 11 years in the NFL and tallied 949 career tackles.
