NC State football picks up Maryland transfer receiver Darryl Jones

NC State football receivers coach Joker Phillips is adding a familiar name to his coaching room after Maryland senior receiver Darryl Jones announced he was transferring to the Wolfpack.

Phillips just completed his first season at NC State. Prior to arriving in Raleigh, Phillips coached receivers, including Jones, the previous two years at Maryland.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Jones will be using a Super Senior year at NC State. He had a breakthrough performance in 2021. The Virginia Beach, Va., native was more of a complementary reserve until this past year when he caught 23 passes for 319 yards and two scores.

A lot of that came in the Terrapins’ bowl win over Virginia Tech, when he had four catches for 111 yards and both touchdowns.

Those were the first two times Jones reached the end zone in his Maryland career. Prior to this season, Jones had 24 career receptions for 353 yards.

His numbers may have been hampered however by the Big Ten’s shortened 2020 season. In five games, Jones had eight catches for 81 yards.

Coming out of Princess Anne High School, Jones was an On3 Consensus four-star and No. 6 prospect in Virginia’s 2018 class. He picked Maryland over offers from Syracuse, UCF, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, among others.

He played in all 12 games as a true freshman in 2018, making nine catches for 147 yards. Jones had eight starts in 2019 and grabbed nine receptions for 158 yards.

Jones’ announcement is the second known transfer addition for NC State football. Towson punter Shane McDonough previously revealed his intentions to join the Wolfpack.

Jones will join a receiving corps that returns two of its three starters. Both redshirt junior Thayer Thomas and redshirt sophomore Devin Carter announced they would bypass trying for the NFL and return for another year at NC State.

NC State is losing its all-time leader in receptions in Emeka Emezie, who has exhausted his eligibility.

The Wolfpack went 9-3 during the regular season, including 6-2 in the ACC, but had its San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl canceled and was awarded the trophy when UCLA bowed out on the day of the game.
