Dave Doeren meets with media before Florida State game
NC State football coach Dave Doeren met with the media Thursday for one last time before Saturday’s 8:00 p.m. kickoff against Florida State. The game will be at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh and can be seen on ACC Network.
A transcript of Dave Doeren’s availability is provided below.
Dave Doeren Pre-Florida State
On practice this week:
Dave Doeren: “It was good. I think guys were anxious to get back on the grass Tuesday and start working on the next thing that they can have. The hardest part is Sunday, Monday after a loss. Once you get into the next team and the game plan, guys came out and gave really good energy.
“We are at that point where you have some guys nicked up so guys are trying to push through that, but the energy and focus was really good.”
On playing a team like Florida State after a loss:
Dave Doeren: “They’re very impressive. Like I said earlier in the week, it’s the best Florida State team we’ve played in a long time. Very athletic offense, experienced team. They grabbed a lot of players out of the portal. Quarterback is playing tremendous. Their defense doesn’t do a lot but they do it well. They play fast.
“Really good football team and also a team that is coming off a loss that’ll be hungry to come in here.”
On tight end Trent Pennix progress from injury:
Dave Doeren: “Losing Dylan Parham to graduation and the NFL and now Trent, two really good players. Trent in this game was huge last year in that win, so we miss him. Hopefully we’ll have him back next week or the week after. Probably trending towards next week, but worst case we’d have him for the rest of the season after the buy.
“He’s doing really good .He’s out there running around today but he’s not ready for this one. We miss him. He’s a weapon at that position.”
On if goals change after Clemson loss:
Dave Doeren: “No, we have to control what we control. We have seven opportunities in the regular season, and we got to go one at a time. As you guys have seen, college football changes week to week. All the hypes on a team, and then things change and then all of a sudden it’s different each week. There’s a lot of football left.

“You can’t let one loss turn into another because you are not focused. We need to our best back on the field and play as well as we can.”
On if experience makes it easier to flush the loss:
Dave Doeren: “It can. I still think when you lose emotional game regardless of your age, there’s something that goes into that. Even as a coach, you got to be able to move on. I think that’s appropriate term.
“But it’s a 24-hour rule, win or loss, and whether you are grieving the loss or celebrating the win, you got to move on and get ready for the next game.”
On what it takes to get more 50-50 balls in passing game:
Dave Doeren: “I think it’s a little bit of everything. We haven’t been in tight games every week, either. Some of these games we were up by 30 points and we just ran the ball to get home. I think as we’re looking at our competitive games, if we’re throwing the ball downfield, 50-50 balls, we need to win them. We have a history of that.
“If they’re going to play soft coverage … that’s different. Then you’re going to be running the ball or throwing it underneath.”
