NC State football receiver Devin Carter announces his return
NC State football will be returning two-thirds of its starting receiving corps after redshirt sophomore Devin Carter revealed on social media that he will be back for another season.
Carter had been contemplating entering the NFL Draft and walked on Senior Day against UNC on Nov. 26 in case he did decide to leave early, but instead he will join redshirt junior starting slot receiver Thayer Thomas in being back in Raleigh.
NC State does lose leading receiver Emeka Emezie, who exhausted his eligibility as the Wolfpack’s all-time leader in catches.
Carter caught 31 passes for 556 yards and six touchdowns this past season. He was third in the team in catches and yardage and tied for second in scores. The highlight of his year was twisting touchdown in the second overtime against Clemson, capping a two-score performance against the Tigers.
He also made an improbable juggling catch behind a defender’s back at Boston College for a score that made the rounds on highlight reels.
The 6-foot-3, 216-pound Carter had 29 receptions for 477 yards and two scores in 2020, and during his rookie campaign in 2019 hauled in 32 passes for 708 yards.

With the departure of Emezie from the receiving corps, Carter’s return was prioritized for NC State football. The Clayton, N.C., native is in line to become the feature receiver on the outside.
Carter joins classmate and quarterback Devin Leary in announcing that they will not be leaving early for the NFL, although in Leary’s case that was anticipated. Leary did not participate in Senior Day festivities.
Carter was the last known decision among starters on the offensive side of the ball. Emezie and tight end Dylan Parham have used up eligibility, while sophomore left tackle Ikem Ekwonu, junior running back Ricky Person Jr., and sophomore running back Zonovan Knight have all decided to turn pro.
That leaves seven starters likely back on offense for NC State, who went 9-3 in the regular season and was awarded the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl trophy after UCLA backed out of the contest at the last minute.
