NC State football loses home-and-home with Cincinnati, per report
For the second time this summer, a pending move by a school to the Big 12 is impacting future NC State football schedules. Cincinnati, which was scheduled to come to Raleigh in 2023 and then host the Wolfpack 6 years later, has canceled the series, per reporting from the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Jason Williams.
Williams is also noting that Marshall “is a leading candidate to replace UC on NC State’s schedule, beginning in 2023 in Raleigh.”
Cincinnati is joining the Big 12 next season along with BYU, Central Florida and Houston. The Big 12 plays 9 conference games, as opposed to 8 in the American Athletic Conference, of which Cincinnati is currently a member.
When the Bearcats make the move to the Power Five level, the program needs to trim non-conference schedules down by 1 game, and NC State was the casualty on their 2023 slate. Cincinnati will instead play Eastern Kentucky and Miami of Ohio at home and at Pittsburgh next year.
NC State and Cincinnati previously had a home-and-home in 2010 and 2011, and the games were split with the home team winning each time.
BYU similarly had a future series with NC State football discarded. The two teams were going to meet in 2024 and 2030, but currently independent BYU is shedding games in preparation for the move to the Big 12.

NC State and Marshall have a recent history of games. They played a home-and-home in 2017 and 2018, with the Wolfpack winning both contests by identical 37-20 scores.
If Marshall is officially added to the NC State football 2023 schedule, the Thundering Herd will join a slate that includes a likely season opener at Connecticut and home dates vs. Notre Dame and VMI.
NC State has not publicly announced a replacement yet for BYU on the 2024 schedule. ACC guidelines dictate that conference teams play another Power Five opponent each year. BYU’s departure from the slate leaves NC State without such a game in 2024.
The 2029 schedule in which NC State was originally going to visit Cincinnati still includes a home game with Notre Dame.
